Bell vines are not hardy. So getting them through the cold season is not that easy. With the right approach, you can still do it.Bell vines are not hardy Bell vines are actually annual plants because they are not frost hardy. However, the plant can be wintered indoors. In the following year you can enjoy the abundant blooming flowers again.
In order for the plant to survive well in the house, it requires good preparation and plenty of care. I have summarized all of this in this post.
6 tips: bring bell vine through the cold season
Tip 1: Bring the vine in early
Bring your bell vine into your home as soon as the temperatures regularly drop below 10 ° C. The first damage can start at 5 ° C. If you wait until it freezes at night, you can expect to lose the vine. Before setting, you must shorten the shoots vigorously.
A total height of the trimmed plant of 50 centimeters is ideal.
Tip 2: Choose a bright, cool winter location
Make sure your bell vine gets enough light even in winter. This is especially true in spring before you take the plant outside again. If the location is too dark, the bell vine uselessly invests its energy in branched shoots that you have to remove.
Treat your golden vine to fresh air in mild weather. The temperature at the winter location should not be less than 10 ° C and not more than 15 ° C. Bright stairways and corridors, attics or unheated storage rooms with large windows are very suitable.
Tip 3: Water regularly weakly
The water requirement of the bell vine is significantly lower in winter than in the warmer seasons. The cooler the location, the less you have to water. Always wait until you feel no more superficial moisture on the substrate.
Tip 4: Check for spider mites
In rather warm locations and with low humidity, bell vines are often attacked by spider mites in winter. If you discover these pests on the underside of the plant, choose a cooler place and spray the leaves regularly with water.
Tip 5: Pinch the bell vine in spring
You should pinch new shoots that form at the beginning of the growing season. They stimulate densely branched growth. Do not tear off the shoot tips, but use a disinfected, sharp knife. This leaves clean cuts that heal quickly.
Tip 6: bring bell vine back outside late
Wait in the spring until night frosts are definitely not to be expected. This is the case in most regions of Germany after the ice saints in mid-May. Only then will you bring the bell vine outside again.
